In a world where social media offers a glimpse into the best moments of everyone’s lives, it’s too easy to fall into the trap of comparison. You scroll through Instagram and see someone traveling the world, another landing a dream job, or someone else celebrating a picture-perfect relationship. Maybe even getting married or announcing a pregnancy and suddenly, your own life feels inadequate. Sound familiar?
Here’s the truth: comparing yourself to others is not only unhelpful—it’s harmful!
“You’re Comparing Against an Illusion”
People tend to show their highlight reels, not their blooper reels. That friend who just got promoted probably doesn’t post about the late nights, the anxiety, or the setbacks they faced. Social media, in particular, is a distorted mirror.
Judging your whole self against someone else’s moments is like comparing your behind-the-scenes to their movie trailer.
Everyone completes things in different times! Life is not a race, and it’s certainly not a straight path. Some people find success early, others later. It all depends on your personal situation and how much effort you put in. Some discover their purpose at 18, others at 50! Your journey is uniquely yours. When you compare yourself to others, you risk losing sight of the progress you’ve already made and the path you’re meant to walk. You may even miss out on life because you are so hooked on other peoples lives, you forget about your own! It can lead to envy, low self-esteem, or a toxic sense of competition. This emotional toll can distract you from your goals and make it harder to feel content with your own achievements.
When your focus is on what others are doing, you’re not focusing on yourself. Growth comes from within—reflecting on your own values, setting your own goals, and measuring your progress based on where you started, not someone else. Progress is personal.
So, What Can You Do Instead?
Celebrate others without diminishing yourself. Someone else’s success doesn’t mean your failure And their success should be celebrated too! We should be helping each other grow. Never drag someone else down.
- Reflect on your own progress. Keep a journal, revisit your goals, and recognize how far you’ve come.
- Unplug from the noise. Take breaks from social media if you find it fuels comparison.
- Focus on your values. What matters most to you? Align your goals and actions with that, not someone else’s standards.
Comparing yourself to others is a habit most of us fall into, but it’s one you can break. The goal isn’t to be better than someone else—it’s to be better than who you were yesterday. Stay in your lane. Tend to your own growth and remember: the only person worth competing with is the person you were last week.
All the best,
