There are days when getting out of bed feels like climbing a mountain. Days when your mind is exhausted, your body feels heavy and everything seems a little too much. You stare at the clock, wondering how you’re going to make it through the next hour, never mind the rest of the day. If you’ve ever felt like this, you’re not alone. Many people experience moments where life feels overwhelming. It doesn’t mean you’re weak, and it doesn’t mean you’ll always feel this way. Sometimes it simply means you’ve been carrying more than anyone can see.
Stop expecting everything to be perfect: One of the biggest pressures we place on ourselves is believing we have to keep performing as though nothing is wrong. We tell ourselves we should be stronger, more productive, happier or able to cope.
Some days, success isn’t completing your entire to-do list.
Sometimes success is:
- Getting out of bed
- Having a shower
- Eating a meal
- Drinking some water
- Replying to one message
- Simply making it through the day
Those things all count. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing and it’s not a race.
Think smaller:
When life feels unbearable, looking at everything you need to do can make it feel even worse. Instead of asking yourself, “How will I get through this week?”
Ask yourself:
“What can I do in the next ten minutes?”
Maybe that’s making a cup of tea. Opening the curtains. Taking a few slow breaths. Putting clean clothes on.
Small steps still move you forward. You only need to take one tiny step. Momentum grows from movement, not perfection.
When we’re struggling, our brain convinces us this feeling will last forever. It won’t. Every emotion changes. Every difficult season eventually shifts. You may not believe that today, but you don’t have to believe it completely to keep going. Sometimes it’s enough to leave room for the possibility that tomorrow could feel different.
Imagine your best friend came to you and said they were exhausted, overwhelmed and barely coping. Would you tell them they’re lazy? Would you tell them to just try harder? NO! You’d offer kindness, patience and understanding. You deserve that same compassion from yourself. Please stop treating yourself like dirt. You deserve care and respect from yourself first. You don’t have to carry every burden by yourself.
On the hardest days, don’t try to solve your whole future. Just find one reason to keep going today:
It might be your family. Your pet. A friend. The sunrise. A favourite song. Your favourite meal. The possibility that life can get better. One reason is enough.
The way you feel today isn’t the end of your story. Some chapters are incredibly difficult. Some seasons last longer than we’d like, but difficult chapters are still only chapters. Keep turning the page. You never know what the next one will bring.
If today feels impossibly hard, give yourself permission to lower the bar. You don’t have to have everything figured out. You don’t need to be fearless. You don’t need to be okay all the time. You only need to keep putting one foot in front of the other and if all you’ve managed today is to survive, then you’ve done enough.
Tomorrow is another chance.
Be gentle with yourself.
You’re still here.
All the best,
Rachel Spooner 🫶🏻
